A group of House Democrats has initiated legislation that aims to prevent Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, and other billionaires from accessing personal tax information. The bill comes in response to a report from ProPublica that claimed billionaires like Musk and Jeff Bezos are able to pay little to no income tax.
The legislation, termed the Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act, is designed to safeguard the personal tax information of individuals, which was allegedly accessed by ProPublica. The news outlet reported that the wealthiest Americans, including Musk, are able to avoid paying income taxes through legal means.
Rep. Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat and the bill's sponsor, pointed out the importance of protecting personal tax information, stating that the violation of these private records is a federal crime. He also criticized the ProPublica report for its alleged invasion of privacy.
The ProPublica report, published in June, claims that some of the wealthiest individuals in America, including Musk and Bezos, have paid a small fraction of their wealth in taxes. The report sparked a debate about the tax system in the United States and its perceived favoritism towards the wealthy.
However, ProPublica defended its investigation, asserting that it served the public interest. It argued that the information revealed was essential for the public to understand the country's tax system and its flaws. ProPublica did not disclose how it obtained the tax information.
The bill introduced by House Democrats will have to be passed by both chambers of Congress and signed by the President before it becomes law. It is yet to be seen how this proposed legislation will be received by other lawmakers and whether it will indeed become law.
