The most interacted-with Facebook post in January 2020 was not a viral video, a celebrity update, or a political rant. Instead, it was a bizarre AI-created image of a horse made entirely out of bread. This quirky revelation, as per a report from the Facebook-owned data analytics firm CrowdTangle, has left many scratching their heads.
The bread horse post first appeared on the 'I'm Sorry Jon' subreddit, which is primarily dedicated to strange and often disturbing reinterpretations of the Garfield comic strip. The image was then shared on Facebook by the page 'Insane People Facebook,' where it received over one million interactions.
What's more interesting is that, despite its massive popularity, the post was not promoted through Facebook's advertising tools and it reached its viral status simply through organic sharing. This suggests that the algorithms Facebook uses to decide what content is shown to whom are not necessarily geared towards promoting the most 'serious' or 'valuable' content, but rather whatever content users find most engaging.
While Facebook declined to comment on the bread horse post specifically, the company has previously stated that its algorithms are designed to 'provide every person with the content that is most relevant to them.'
